I’ve been blogging about this for a while and I guess eventually when you are in this subject area you will come across a great article. This is one of them. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good articles on “How to be a successful Software Engineer”. This article is special, very special:
http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/article/how-to-be-a-successful-software-engineer/
Nice and simple and well structured and focussed on the type of things that I have seen great engineers focus on in their career. This is a gem of an article for young and not so-young aspiring developers.
https://www.sig.eu/en/building-maintainable-software/
It’s all java but the principles are all the same for C# – contains quite a few really good examples of refactoring/refining code.
Another older but great article focussing on advice for young developers:

Here’s the key advice for students about to embark on a career in Software Engineering:

This is a nice article focussing on self taught programmers.
What I really like the most is the focus on Craft a Portfolio – really like the advice the authors focusses on – this is not just useful for self taught programmers but all programmers should consider this.
For those interested in a great JAM here is another brilliant comp and a great chance to code for a week a build something cool in the PCG space.
General reminder about a good place to prepare for JAMs like this: roguelikeradio.com check for the episodes in the archives for 7DRL and Procjam
Scott Hanselman is one of my favourite bloggers but the amazing thing that I feel makes his blog so valuable is actually the comments. This is no fluke. His posts generate debate and the varied responses provide another level of depth to his original post.
Here’s a great example:
I know I blogged about this a few days ago but I need to do a reminder already:
